Easter in Aotearoa-New Zealand

Easter is our appointed cultural commemoration of the death and resurrection of Jesus — celebrated in recognition of the significance of his life to a great many of our cultural values and benefits. Ideas as simple as a politician being called a ‘public servant’ instead of a ruler are directly traced to Jesus’ teachings and influence within our history — as also the shaping of our remarkably high levels of cultural freedom, prosperity, equality and charity. The festivals cultural purpose is storytelling, to understand who how we came to be who we are as a people.

The festival is concurrently a religious festival for those believing in the idea of a good and loving God who has made himself known to humankind. It is the most significant festival on the Christian calendar. The hope-filled idea it represents centres on a belief that Jesus was not only the greatest revelation of God, but also his very embodiment for us — offering spiritual salvation, eternal hope, and a calling to a life of selfless love.
